Specialized CNC Lathe Collet Shelf

Project Overview

This project began with a need to improve the organization and accessibility of CNC lathe collets within the manufacturing environment. The existing storage method made it difficult to quickly identify and access the correct collet, while also taking up valuable workspace. I was responsible for developing a dedicated storage solution that would keep the collets organized, accessible, and protected while integrating cleanly into the existing work area.

The shelf was designed specifically around the dimensions and requirements of the collets, as well as the capabilities of our in-house manufacturing equipment. The goal was to create a simple, durable solution that improved workflow while maintaining a clean and intentional appearance.

Design, Development, and CAD Modeling

After identifying the storage requirements, I developed the shelf concept around the specific collet sizes and the way they are used throughout the machining process. The design went through several iterations to determine the most effective spacing, accessibility, and overall footprint while making efficient use of the available material.

I then developed the final concept into a detailed CAD model, using the model to refine dimensions, verify fit, and plan the manufacturing process. Designing within the capabilities of our in-house equipment allowed me to consider fabrication methods from the beginning. This was fabricated using a flat laser, tube laser, press brake, and saw, all coming together to form a welded product.

The completed collet shelf provides a dedicated and organized storage location directly within the CNC machining environment. Each collet has a defined position, making it easier for operators to quickly identify, access, and return tooling while keeping the surrounding workspace organized.

Final Result

The project demonstrates how a relatively simple fixture can improve day-to-day workflow when it is designed around the specific needs of the user and manufacturing environment. From identifying the problem through CAD development and fabrication, I was able to take the project from concept to a functional shop-floor solution.
